Durham County Record Office: the official archive service for County Durham and Darlington

How to volunteer

Durham at War, our First World War centenary project, includes a substantial programme of volunteer activities with many opportunities for research, training, collections care and the digitisation of family records and photographs.

Visit the Durham at War website.

You do not need any special knowledge to become a volunteer as the project is intended to be a learning experience for everyone who is involved.

If you already know a lot about the First World War, particularly in the North East, and would like to contribute to this project, we would like to hear from you.

Volunteers can help to collect information, check its accuracy and organise it so that it can be linked to an interactive mapping website. There will be many ways to get involved, at home, in local libraries, archives and museums, and out in the field.

Please complete the online form to register your interest in the World War One HLF Project.

There is also a printable version of the form

WW1 Project Register an Interest Form (PDF, 110kb)

After acknowledging the receipt of your application we will contact you to enrol you as a volunteer and introduce you to the project.  Please note that although we are recruiting at the moment, we will not be running any training activities until the New Year.
