Collections Search

Collections Search shows you all the options for searching the records we keep.

Online catalogue

We have a detailed online catalogue which allows you to search our archive collections from home.
Search the catalogue

Photographs

You can view over 40,000 photographs from the collections online. More than 34,000 of these images are from the Durham Light Infantry archives. The remainder are mostly topographical photographs and postcards.
Search the catalogue and select the option to view 'Image Results Only'.

Family history and church registers

Use our church registers database to find out what registers we keep and whether they are indexed, before you contact us to apply for copies.

Mining history and mining ancestors

Search Durham Collieries or search our Mining Durham's Hidden Depths database. Our Durham Collieries database links to online mapping where you can check colliery locations.

County Durham place names and interactive mapping

Try our place names index and interactive mapping if you are not familiar with County Durham places. The online mapping includes six inch to the mile historic Ordnance Survey maps.

First World War

The Durham at War website contains thousands of stories about people, places, events and organisations in County Durham in the First World War.

The 'Explore' section of Durham at War gives you online access to 25 inch to the mile Ordnance Survey maps from a hundred years ago.

Copying service

We can copy most records so that you can study them at home.

See copying service for details of our copying facilities.
See order and pay for copies for details of costs and how to pay.

Research service

Our research service is intended to help people who want information from the Record Office but cannot visit, or who have run out of time during their visit. We can carry out short, specific searches, or more extended research, depending on your requirements.
