This regiment later became part of the Durham Light Infantry. This photograph was taken in 1874 in India.

The British had been exploring and had held land in India for centuries, but from 1858, India was ruled by Britain, so the British Army had to be there to protect and look after it.

At that time, it took weeks to get to India and the regiment would be there for years at a time.

It was a very long time to be away from their families, so some officers and soldiers were allowed to take their families with them. Let's have a look at one of those families.
