Our visions of England and rosy apples on every tree were soon

met with the realities of having to get up and go to school in the frost and

cold. What was utter misery in no way helped by seeing the other boys

enjoying it all. We would go into the town in a double decker bus drawn by

four horses and my mother informed us that it was unnecessary to take a

hurricane lamp as the streets were lighted. When not at school, we almost

lived in the regimental stables and knew every horse by name.
