Life for Rich People

In Tudor times, there were some very rich and important men who lived near Durham. Let's find out more about two of them, the Earl of Northumberland and the Earl of Westmorland.

The Earl of Northumberland

Earl of Northumberland (Library A44)
This is the Earl of Northumberland, his name is Thomas Percy. His home was at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland. He also spent a lot of time at court in London.

Like a lot of people in the north, he was catholic. Queen Elizabeth I was protestant.

The Earl of Northumberland wanted Mary, Queen of Scots, to be queen instead of Elizabeth because Mary was catholic.

The Earl of Westmorland

Earl of Westmorland (Library A44)
This is the Earl of Westmorland, his name is Charles Neville. His home was at Raby Castle, near Barnard Castle.

Like the Earl of Northumberland, he was catholic and wanted Mary, Queen of Scots to be queen instead of Elizabeth I.

Now that we know who they were, let's see if we can use an inventory of belongings to find out a bit more about how rich people lived.
