Who Was Involved?

If you've looked at the section about rich people, you'll recognise the Earl of Westmorland and the Earl of Northumberland. Both of them were very important people in this area during Tudor times.

They were both Catholic, this meant that they believed that the Pope should be the head of the church and that the bible should be in Latin. They wanted Mary, Queen of Scots to be queen instead of Elizabeth, because Mary was catholic and Elizabeth was protestant.

In 1569 they decided to do something about it. They rebelled and gathered an army by asking local people to fight with them. Then they marched south with their army to rescue Mary.
