Durham County Record Office: the official archive service for County Durham and Darlington

What is the difference between Durham County Record Office and the archives at Durham University Library?

Both archives are in Durham City.  Durham County Record Office is the local authority archive service for County Durham. Our collections include parish registers, council and school records, prison and court records and coal and lead mining records.

Durham University Library Archives and Special Collections has the records of Durham diocese, including wills and bishops' transcripts, the archives of the university, and  special collections including the Sudan Archive.

You will find tithe plans, enclosure records, land tax assessments and complementary family history sources in both record offices.
