Archives are our collective memory; they provide a unique access to our past.  They are the written records of people's day-to-day lives.

Come and Explore 900 years of County Durham's history.

Visit us or find out more about our records.

Experience the lives of Durham's people in the First World War on Durham at War.

Archives are not just about history.  People use them to:

  • establish rights of way and boundaries
  • help with planning applications
  • prove their citizenship or
  • help secure a school place.

High profile investigations like Hillsborough demonstrate the importance of written evidence.  Locally, the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse has given many individuals the confidence, after many years, to report incidents they suffered in their childhood, and our archives help the police to investigate and build a case.
