Heritage Open Day on Saturday 14 September

Crime and punishment is the theme for this year's event in the archives

You're welcome to visit the archives on Saturday 14 September 2019 to celebrate Heritage Open Day.

    Look behind the scenes and discover how County Durham's written heritage is preserved and used today. 

    This event will focus on 400 years of crime and punishment records covering County Durham's police, courts, prisons, criminals and victims.

    Our archives tell stories of dastardly deeds and hard times. Find out more about:

    - notorious serial killer Mary Ann Cotton
    - destitute children sent to Industrial Schools to prepare them for employment
    - transportation to Australia.

    Sessions from:

    • 10.00am to 11.00am
    • 11.00am to noon
    • Noon to 1.00pm

    Where: Durham County Record Office, County Hall, Durham DH1 5UL

    This event is free (donations welcome on the day).
