Durham County Record Office: the official archive service for County Durham and Darlington

Coronavirus update

Search room still closed but we are answering email enquiries. Preparing for limited reopening, in November at the earliest.

Our search room closed on Wednesday 18 March 2020 and remains closed until further notice as part of Durham County Council's response to government guidance on Coronavirus.

The council has been responding to the high volume of Covid cases in County Durham and is only now implementing plans for a phased and hybrid return to office working, which will not be fully in place until the end of October.  As yet, therefore, the record office is unable to reopen.

It will take time to establish new procedures and to publicise new systems. Updates will be published here on our website, but it will be November 2021 at the earliest before the office can reopen on a limited basis.

If you have enquiries while we are closed please email us.

Please do not pay for research or quick search services via our online shop before emailing to check whether we are able to process your request.

Online events

Family history courses and Third Thursday talks have all moved online.

Find details and book online in the Events section of the Record Office online shop.
