Hearth Tax Returns

In the Record Office you will find microfilm copies of hearth tax returns covering 1663-1666 and 1674. They give the names of individuals with chargeable and non-chargeable hearths and the numbers of hearths. Some of the records are damaged and some are illegible. The original records are in The National Archives.

The Hearth Tax return for County Durham for Lady Day 1666 has been indexed, transcribed and analysed in a publication of The British Record Society entitled 'Durham Hearth Tax'. It can be consulted in the Record Office’s library (ref:C 162).
