Durham Collieries

By Map

The Durham Collieries information which can be viewed 'by map' uses an interactive technology known as 'Geographical Information System' (GIS) to allow you to view both modern and historical maps of pre-1974 County Durham and relate them to collieries in pre-1974 County Durham from c.1850 to c.1990.

Please click on the button below to launch the GIS and then click on a grid square using the 'Identify Tool' to find details of mines within a particular area.

Launch the GIS now!

Using GIS

Once you have launched the GIS you will notice that a range of additional functions are available to you. Please feel free to browse around functions such as 'Map Layers' and My Layers' or use the 'Search' facility, details of which are available via our mapping help pages. To assist you in understanding the technical jargon associated with GIS we have also compiled a glossary of GIS Terms, and provided an explanation of the 'Map Tools' and their functions.

Should you require further assistance using the GIS please contact the GIS Team for specialist advice.
